Hello.. I am technologically impaired..lol and would appreciate some advice.

I am currently running Windows98 on my PC. I need to install a new version
of Windows for certain programs to run. I have been given Windows Server 2000
from a friend who bought it but doesn't actually need it.

My question is: if I install this will it wipe EVERYTHING I have off my PC
or will it just go ontop of my old Operating System and leave my other stuff
as is???

First, windows Server 2000 is not windows 2000. Consider whether it
will actually do what you want?

I had a similar situation, win98se and w2kpro. I set up a dual boot,
with w2k on a separate disk. Unless you can be certain you no longer
need win98 you should go dual-boot, with the w2k on a separate disk is
best, or a separate partition otherwise. DO NOT put it on the same
partition. If dual booting, use FAT32 instead of NTFS, so you can share
files either way.

If you do put w2k over your win98 (upgrade) it should not wipe
everything out, but given that you have Server, and are not real sure
about what you are trying to do, I strongly recommend the dual boot
idea. You will have to reinstall your programs on the w2k partition,
but that should be quite easy, and then just copy your data and configs
over for a seamless transition.

Be VERY careful about setting up a w2k installation (or ME, 2003, XP,
anything later than win98se). I waited Years to do so, sticking with
win98se because it was fairly proof against all the overflow and other
attacks that hackers used to go after all newer windows OS. Only with
w2k sp4 and certain newer patches was I willing to accept the risk, and
even then I proceeded with great care, and still needed more security to
stop the problems (I had to put in ZoneAlarm firewall to stop getting
nuked several times a day by sasser worm, and numerous patches were
required via MS update [get and use the Baseline Security Analyser from
ms to make sure you got everything you need - take security Very
seriously, because the hackers take getting at you very seriously).
Before starting to install, DL the file for the latest service pack from
microsoft, and disconnect from the net (pull the plug) to make sure you
can get patched before any hack has a shot at you. If you don't, you
WILL be infected within seconds of going online.

Wow, thanks so much for that info! I really only need 98se, but this
server2000 was given to me so thought i might use it instead. After reading
your post I think I mihgt just get the 98se.

The 1st question you should ask yourself is: Why upgrade? Do you get any
functional improvement, or is this just to look good?

I know I resisted it for years, but finally had to do it to use more ram
properly, and get support for directx 9+. w2kpro is a bit faster and
generally better on my middling machine, and is important for my next
machine with bigger HD and later programs. Everyone has different needs.

I am more than happy NOT to upgrade - just more hassles as far as I am
concerned. However I want to install some software for my mobile phone and it
tells me it won't install on my version of WIndows, that I need at least to
have 98se. I just have 98.

Look at EBAY for a Win98se package.

But, why server instead of Pro?

The Pro would be your solution, not server....
