Intrusion by Windows Security

A few days ago, Windows Security appeared as an icon among the running
programs on my computer. I opened it, and found that it has turned itself on
and will not let me turn it off. Specifically, it did let me turn off
Automatic Updates, but will not let me turn off Firewall or Virus Protection.
I am concerned that this program may conflict with my Norton Internet
Security. What can I do?

You mean Windows Security Centre (little red shield)?

Start>Run> type "services.msc" without the quotes, hit return.

Expand the Services Window, scroll down till you find "Security
Centre" double click the entry to open the GUI box.

Stop the service.

Set "Start up Type" to "Disabled"

Click out and reboot.

The Security Center is only an alerter. It is not an antivirus,
firewall, or automatic updater. It only tells you the state of these
items.

Either leave the Security Center alone since now you know what it is
really for, change the way it alerts you (see the links on the left
side "change how Security Center alerts me"), or disable the Security
Center service by running services.msc (not recommended).

Please provide some clarification. First: Will Windows Security Center
conflict with Norton Internet Security? Second: What would be the
consequences of turning off Windows Security Center, as Jonah advised?
Thanks, folks!

No it won't clash with NIS it is designed to monitor it to ensure your
AV signatures are up to date. It does the same thing with most of the
AV solutions out there also, it will alert you if your AV is out of
date, firewall is switched off. It will not update anything for you it
just advises.

The consequenses of turning it off mean you have to monitor windows
updates yourself, AV signatures should auto update anyway, if they
don't get a decent AV client.

If you are able to keep your AV updated and Update Windows on the 2nd
Tuesday of every month yourself you do not need the security centre.
Its a hand holding device for inexperienced users that appeared with
SP2 to try and ensure people updated Windows and had AV / Firewalls
installed and updated. Its a good thing for newbies and an annoyance
for experienced users - but it is harmless in itself.

I disable it as a matter of course because for me it is annoying and
unecessary.

Your choice.

Repeat after me: The Windows Security Center is not an antivirus. It is
only an alerter to tell you the state of your antivirus protection AS
PERCEIVED BY WINDOWS. Therefore, the Windows Security Center does not
conflict with antivirus programs or third-party firewalls.

The consequences of turning off the Windows Security Center is that you
will not get alerts about the status of your antivirus and firewall
protection and your Automatic Update status.

As a matter of fact, it is likely that Windows Security Center is *not*
actually running at all because the default behavior of Norton Internet
Security is to *disable* Windows Security Center and use its own
Security Control Panel or whatever they call it. So if you installed
NIS with all the defaults, you aren't even *seeing* the Windows
Security Center. You are seeing the Norton Security Center. Check
again.
