Dear all,

I have a Dutch computer Windows XP, Office 2003 and Internet Explorer
6.0. I use Outlook.
I have an ADSL Internet connection.
Everything is in Dutch.

The shortcuts of webpages that I made on my desktop suddenly do not
work anymore.
Before, I just doubleclicked them and the webpage would open, now it
asks with which programme I want to open it!!!!

However if I open Internet first by clicking on the small icon IE next
to the start-knob, then suddenly all shortcuts DO work properly.

What can I do to avoid this work-around?
I would love to be able to visit the Internet just by doubleclicking on
the shortcuts.

All other shortcutss (Excel etc) work properly.

I think the problem was caused after I downloaded a security update
that Microsoft told me to download by automatic Windows update. Because
after that I suddenly had this problem.
Maybe it is a coincidence....
I removed the update but there was no change.
I also did system restore to 10 October but no result.

Would appreciate your help.
I am an ordinary computeruser, not very technical.

I suspect you omitted iexplore.exe in your shortcuts. What does
their "target" look like? You'll find it under "Properties" when
you right-click the shortcut.

Is this the target?
In Dutch it says "doel" meaning aim or destination.

C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\iexplore.exe

Giny

Yes, this is the target, and it should be something like

c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

You can easily verify this with Windows Explorer, by checking
if the file exists at the nominated location.

No, that is the strange thing, I cannot find it there, I can only find
it in the C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\iexplore.exe .
In the Windows Explorer there is in the Programme files: Internet
Explorer
then yellow map Connection wizard
yellow map Plugins
yellow map sign up
and files:
hmmapi.dll
iedw.exe
kb870669.cat
q330994.cat
q823353.cat

The Explorer.exe is only in the
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\iexplore.exe .

How did this message is now post-dated to 2031? My system's date/time
is clearly correct!

Is there a gremlin at work?

what is a gremlin, I do not understand what you mean.
I write in Central European time.

Altough I am a complete untechnical person, I copied the Internet
Explorer.exe from C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\iexplore.exe and
pasted it in Programme files, Internet Explorer map and it works!
My shortcuts open again!

Thank you anyway for helping me.

My computer is postdating some messages though I have seen only one so
far! My system date is correct so something at MS end!

Giny,

Gremlin is noun to denote mischievous sprite regarded as responsible for
unexplained mechanical or electrical faults.

In my ase my message was post dated to year 2031! I can't explain
this. I am using Windows XP Professional, fully patched up!
