Hi,

I just reinstalled XP Pro with sp2. I had networking working for a short
while after reinstallation, but after installing some more programs (just
simple stuff like Paint Shop Pro, and Photoshop Elements etc), it has just
stiopped working. My other computer runs Win2000, and nothing has changed
there, and works fine.

Following the network problem, I tried deleting the 'Manage my user network
passwords' in 'User Accounts' and tried re-entering my user name etc, but it
says it 'cannot save the information because it is in the wrong format, or
contains characters that are not valid.' It only has an underscore between my
first name, and last name. It also worked previously before reinstallation,
and for a short while after reinstallation, so I'm not sure that is the
problem.

I've also tried all the below from Steve Winograd, but still nothing enables
me to see my other computer:

"Run the Network Setup Wizard on PC1. That's often all that's needed
to fix the problem.

If that doesn't fix it, the solution depends on whether simple file
sharing is enabled or disabled on PC1. To see, click My Computer |
Tools | Folder Options | View, scroll to the end of the list of
advanced settings, and look at the "simple file sharing" box.

If simple file sharing is enabled (box is checked), make sure that the
Guest account is enabled for network access:

1. Right click My Computer.
2. Click Manage.
3. Click Local Users and Groups.
4. Double click Users.
5. Double click Guests.
6. Un-check "Account is disabled".

If simple file sharing is disabled (box is un-checked):

1. Create user account(s) on PC1 that match the accounts that you use
to log onto PC2 and PC3 -- same user name and password.

2. Make sure that network access is enabled:

a. Click Start | Run, type "secpol.msc" in the box, and click OK.
b. Click Local Policies.
c. Click User Rights Assignment.
d. Click "Access this computer from the network" and make sure that
the Everyone group is included.
e. Click "Deny access to this computer from the network" and make
sure that the Everyone group is NOT included.

In the "deny access to this computer from the network" section above, is the
sole entry "Support_388945a0". Should that be there?

Incidentally, when I first reinstalled, I had the admin account set up with
a password, and XP should have asked me for this to access the install admin
account, but did not, and just went straght into it. I wonder if this is
relevant? The admin account probably will still have the defective password
set up, even though I have now set up other user admin accounts afer running
XP.

Regards,
Jules
