My internet goes out like clock work every 90 minutes, and in order for me
to prove to verizon that their service sucks, I have to plug a computer in
directly to the modem. Well, I have the modem and router and 1 computers in
the closet so that shouldn't be hard to do... but it is.

What is frustrating me is that the originally I couldn't take the time to
jot down my problems when I first tried plugging the pc to the modem so now
that problem doesn't happen anymore... but here's what it was.
When I plug that computer into the modem itself, I can only access web pages
by ip. Yet, if I plug it back into the router everything is fine.

The first time I called verizon they basically said that because the problem
didnt happen when I was on the phone with them, they wouldn't do anything...
although it happend when I was on freakin hold! And also, they also said
that because I was able to get it to work by plugging into the modem (even
though I couldn't punch in websites by domain name) it was working
perfectly. They wouldn't even help me fix that to try and test more.

Now, I've been getting a slew of other problems I can't figure out. (this is
now me coming back to the problem a few weeks later) I went ahead and tried
plugging the computer into the modem directly and couldnt access any web
pages. I couldn't even access a a computer by remote desktop. I figured that
should work cause it was an ip address. And I didn't think to get any
website ips before I did this to test further. Anyways though, this time
around, I couldn't access web pages and I had an ip like 169.254.210.236

In my network ip settings I have auto dhcp and auto dns so, i tried
releasing and renewing just to test stuff, but it wouldn't ever renew.
Rebooting allowed me to get that number again, but now (not sure if it was
stuck in memory or something) a few more reboots later, I can't even connect
and get an ip anymore.

So, what it all comes down to is that I HAVE to make sure that I get
disconnecte from verizon when I'm plugged into the modem directly so I can
rule out my router as a causing problem. I even went as far as calling
netgear to see if they could help me figure out if there was a log somewhere
on the router that could tell me if the isp was dc'ing me or what by they
said no and that was that. Also, if it is verizon, then I'm gonna drop their
service like a bad habbit and get something else.

PLEAE HELP I'm desperate.

PS. Maybe it wasn't necessary to explain all that stuff, since I guess now
the ultimate goal is to be able get this working when I plug it in directly
into the modem.

I will mention one thing I have noticed with almost every modem out on
the market for broadband services.
They hold the last connected device, probably by Mac Address, and will
not assign a new dhcp address to it.
You HAVE to power cycle the modem everytime you plug a new device into
it.. i.e. PC or router.

If you have to enter IP addresses for websites, you are having a DNS
issue.
If you are not power cycling the modem then the DNS is not being
assigned to the PC when you plug it in.
When you plug the router in, the modem remembers and can assign values
through DHCP.

Try power cycling the modem, then pluggin the cable from your PC into
the modem.
Then see if you can open sites normally.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now if you experience the DNS problem with the PC plugged directly into
the modem ( every 90 mintues it happens like you say ) then you know
it's your router.
Don't rule out the router.. I have replaced more routers then I think
should be normal... For instance I just tried Vonage.. and the router
I got from them after a couple of hours will slow down all inbound
traffic to 256kbps when I have a 3mbps line......

I have definitely powercycled the modem... and actually that may be what
just ruined me because now that I think about it, I had that 129 ip before I
did and since doing so I can't even connect. The DNS problem isn't related
to the 90 minute disconnect its just on this one computer that does that.
But again, even after powercycling I can't connect with this one computer.
And if I connect the modem to the router and the computer into the router,
everything is perfect.

so, now something is improperly configured on this one computer and I I need
to somehow reset it to defaults or something so I can try to get back to the
main problem.

I'm really hoping its not a router problem but that's why I'm doing all this
so I can confirm once and for all that its either their problem and they
aren't owning up to it, or my router is defecting.

Well, it turns out it IS a router problem. But the other problem was that
verizon, not my modem was holding my mac address and that is why I couldn't
renew... they said it wouldn't drop for 2 freakin hours. what a joke.

Thanks anyways, now I gotta see if there's anything netgear can helpme with.
