Hello All,
Have posted this before, but everything I've tried has failed (ie Google searches, other forums). It affects crunching more than anything else, I lose Internet connection regularly. Sometimes 'refresh' works and other times I have to reboot. It's ok when a task is running but if one finishes BOINC cannot download the next one.
When I reboot a 'sysfader' dialogue box appears before shutdown but is gone before I can see what it is about.
I think I need to re-install XP, but I have been told that you can only do this a maximum 6 times - this will be the third time due to hardware changes. I don't want to pay another £55, but want to keep on crunching, especially on the 'Defeat Cancer' project.
Any ideas?
Sorry for the long thread.
Thanks in advance,

You can re-install XP till you're blue in the face and it will everytime ... don't know where you got 6 from.

You can change any component you like, worst thing you'll have to do is phone an 0800 number to get re-activated ... and just to be sure you got that ... it is free.

Now, are you using USB modem?

:)

* I only charge £10 *

Hi Potguy,
Connecting through SWEEX Router, ADSL modem, Firewall. Have had no problem with maintaining connection on Linux OS distros.
Thanks for your reply,

Hi Guys,
Router/modem is connected to RJ45 socket - have changed the cat5 cable for one that I know works. Just had the same problem - the dialogue box on shutdown is BOINC - got a longer look this time.
Cheers.

Try this ...

Go to START / CONTROL PANEL / DISPLAY / NVIDIA NVIEW DESKTOP MANAGER / tab DESKTOP MANAGEMENT / PROPERTIES / tab APPEARANCE / EFFECTS and uncheck the FADE EFFECT option.

or try ...

In IE, open Tools / Manage Add-ons ... and turn 'em all of, add them back one at a time to find the possible cuprit.

:)

Thank Mucks,
Will try that.
BTW, the 6 'goes' on XP came from a person who now tells me he had installed it illegally on multiple machines. The reverse of that is that there is a legal copy of XP on the HDD of my daughter's dead laptop - no installation disk just 'recovery'.
We bought the Toshiba for her as a Christmas present a couple of years ago when I knew jack s--t about anything to do with PCs. I now know a little bit more than that thanks to the forum and share your anger at these installations.
Must stop now - blood pressure rising.
Cheers,

Engaged brain after a long day mixing concrete. There is a fade on shutdown - never saw it before I had this problem.

Yeah those recovery disks are always crap. The one on this pc just crashed whenever I tried to use it, so in 3 years I didn't format once, after which time I bit the bullet and just got a fresh copy.

I hate companies.

Hi Mucks,

Something is happening!. Got rid of desktop fader as you suggested. PC ran for a few hours then BOINC lost contact. This time the sysfader dialogue box 'unable to end program' stayed, so it looks like it is the problem. Will try the IE suggestion now.
Thanks,

Oops - lost it again!

Hello All,
Still have the same problem. Can crunch for about three hours then lose Internet connection. Tried Mucks' suggestions - fade effect and IE Add-ons - thanks for those. Now going to re-install XP. No problem with this apart from BOINC - do I just download software and re-register?
Thanks in advance,
peahouse05:)

No, no need to re-register ... just use the same name & email as you have now and it will pick up where you left off ... minus one WU

Sorry you still have problems. :(

Thanks Mucks,
BTW, could run my Asrock kn8 PC 24/7 if it was less noisy. Have some birthday money left, can you recommend a quiet tower case/psu.

oh, any old tin can will do for me ... but I am partial to Enermax PSUs

No need to spend too much either. ;)

Some of the lads have other idieas ... :thumb:

Thanks Mucks,
Will look into it - what about a bit of water cooling CPU (expensive) and what about cabling a PSU from the garage - a few metres of fat cable wouldn't drop too many volts - a few barrel connectors and we're there. Going to try it with an old PC.
I know this is probably mad but I think they call it 'thinking outside the box'!
The madness is caused by daughter's dead laptop.

I'm surprised you still have your head ... if you want quiet, do as I do, turn off your hearing aid. ;)

I have 3 PCs in my bedroom, I never hear any of them when I'm asleep.

The only time I would use any water ... is to put the fire out. :D

Right Mucks,
We can hear the Atlantic Ocean from our bungalow (didn't think of that). Will leave two on tonight and imagine it's air con.

Hello All,
Re-installed XP yesterday and have had no problem with Internet connection since.
Mucks, right as usual, PC left on all night over weekend, slept like a baby, it's all in the mind.
Cheers,
