Is there an error message in the Address bar, or in the status bar at
the bottom of the window? Will other browsers work? Get this program
from another computer, and run on the damaged one:

We'd love to help you but you haven't provided any information about
your computer or how you connect to the Internet so we can't.

See this link for what details you need to include in your next
newsgroup post in order to get focused help:

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the machine is clean:

Thanks for the advice. Internet Explorer was working fine until I decided to
run Registry Mechanic and then Power Defragmenter.

Normally I use Firefox but occasionally I use IE. I have no problem
accessing the Internet with Firefox. I've checked my Zone Alarm firewall
settings and this is not the problem. Malware is not the prob either. I
have Ad-aware, AVG and Windows Defender and have checked the PC.

It is too late to use system restore, as I was not aware of the IE problem
straight away. When I open IE I do not get an error message just an egg
timer and no other activity.

I looked at a number of the links you gave but none looked promising.

If you need more info can you tell me exactly what you need to know. Thanks
again for your help.

This is another example of why a user should not use a registry cleaner
unless they already know what they are doing, in which case it's not needed.
They cause more trouble then good.

Well there you go. If either of those two program have an Undo feature,
use it. Since you can't use System Restore you're pretty well stuck. If
the programs don't have an Undo, try a Repair Install. If that doesn't
work, then you need to do a clean install.

This is why running registry cleaners, etc. is not A Good Thing.
