internet explorer won't connect

Whwn I double click internet explorer I get the sand timer
but it then goes away then comes back then goes away
again. When I turn on my computer yahoo messenger comes up
and I can get my e-mail from outlook express but internet
explorer will not take me to my roadrunner home page. Have
had roadrunner for a year and no problems,then this
happened.When I am able to connect through IE, will then
get an illegal opertion shut down window-details- general
protection fault in module user.exe at 0003:00001022
