When I'm online in Internet Explorer 6.0 and right click on any page, a
window pops up with a menu list of what appear to be a mix of commands --
e.g. Select All, Create Shortcut, Add To Favorites, etc -- and the names of
previously visited Web sites.

My question is this: How can I access and delete from this menu list
inactive web sites?

Thanks

Julian,

The items Select All, Create Shortcut, Add To Favorites are the standard ones which can't be removed. The additional menu extensions can be removed by a registry edit or using ToolbarCop.

1. Click Start, Run type REGEDIT
2. Navigate to the following key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MenuExt]
3. Each subkey of this key represents one menu item. Highlight the key you want to delete
4. Choose Export from the Registry menu and export that branch to a file.
5. Now delete the key.

-or-

Using ToolbarCop to remove the unwanted Toolband, Toolbar Icons and BHO:

Go to favorites and use right click, delete... Yes or use the organize
favorites to delete.

Thanks Ramesh.

I followed your concnise and clear instructions with success. But now I have
two follow-up questions -- 1) Is the purpose of the Export before the Delete
to allow undoing the Delete? And 2) Can I delete the exported files if they
are no longer needed and I have no prblems following the delete?

Finally, do you have any cautionary advice regarding the use of registry
cleaners? I'm currently using TweakNow becuase it's freeware.

Thanks so much. Julian

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried with success an alternate suggestion from
Ramesh that Internet menu entries are stored in the Registry and can be
removed by using RegEdit.

1) Is the purpose of the Export before the Delete to allow undoing the Delete?

Yes, by double-clicking on the REG file, you can undo the changes.

2) Can I delete the exported files if they are no longer needed and I have no prblems following the delete?

Yes.

3) Finally, do you have any cautionary advice regarding the use of registry cleaners?

As we see in the Newsgroups, sometimes registry cleaners cause cosmetic problems in Windows. So make sure that the registry cleaner software has a backup / undo functionality.
