Internet Explorer hangs when typing a web address into the address bar

Hi there,

I've had a problem over the past couple of months with Internet Explorer 6
(all latest service packs installed, and I use the Windows 2000 operating
system).

Basically, when I open a new IE window, and type a web address into the
address bar and press return, it will sometimes hang. The only way to close
it is to go into the Task Manager and choose 'End Task.' I will then get a
window appear saying it is not responding, so I choose to 'End Now.'

Afterwards, when I open another IE window, and type the address in again, it
will sometimes hang again. This can happen a few times, one after another,
but eventually, I will be able to open another IE window, and it *will*
work!

Basically, this problem keeps happening, but sometimes it will hang once,
twice, three, or more times. It has been happening a lot more than usual
tonight, and has been really annoying me, and hence I'm posting here for
help.

When I type into the address bar, it has hung on me no matter what format
I've typed the address, whether I've typed www.whatever.com or whatever.com.
It seems to be random. I'm sure it has hung on me when http://whatever.com
and http://www.whatever.com, but tonight, when I type in the http:// part,
it is working perfectly each time. Then after the problem happening a dozen
or more times, I type in the same address, and it works every time! :-S

Any advice on how to fix this problem will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Stephen

Run in this order:

1. CWShredder (fix all)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all)

3. Spybot (generally, fix all in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

Hi Robear,

Thank you for your comprehensive reply, it is much appreciated.

I already have Ad-Aware and Spybot installed, with the latest updates, and
they give me the all clear. This is why I posted here, because I felt that
this might not have been a 'hijackware' problem. However, I will read
through those links that you have posted.

....I have just downloaded CWShredder, and this found that everything was
'not present,' but it did restore 8 IE infected entries (sorry, I forgot
what the exact words were, but you will know what I mean, it was one of the
final items in the list).

....I did the above a few hours ago, and I've just encountered the same
problem with my Internet Explorer browser freezing. I will try HijackThis
next, and will post my findings in one of those forums. If I find a
solution, I will also post back here out of courtesy to yourself for helping
me, and in case it can help any others with similar problems.

Thanks again.

Kind Regards,

Ste

We've seen several cases as yours in
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 recently.

You might also try...

1. (Re-)Installing 5.6 Scripting Engine from
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp

2a. Start>Run>Regsvr32 vbscript.dll

2b. Start>Run>Regsvr32 jscript.dll

(WinXP-SP1 users can ignore 2a and 2b; See
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers_9.htm)

3. Re-register all DLLs listed in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281679
