Internet Explorer 6 Locks

For the last week or so, I have fo;und that when I close
IE 6, my system locks, and I have to do a hard reboot.
THe browser and rest of the system seem to be working fine.
I am using Wndows 98 SE, Norton Antivirus and Personal
Firewall. No recent changes to system.
Should I try loading the newest service pak over the
existing program.
Thanks for any help suggestions you may have.

There's a good possibility that this is being caused by a third-party
program (adware, spyware, parasite).
