Internet Explorer 6 "File Download" Dialog Box Missing

My issue is that when downloading a file (IE6, Win 98),
normally you see a "File Download" dialog box that gives
you the option to "Open", "Save", or "Cancel". This box
never appears. The file downloads to the TIF folder and
you must root through the folder to find it or do a
search for the file name (assuming you know it) - not an
easy task for a novice.

Thanks,
Dave

What file type?
For most (not .exe)...

You set this for each file type, e.g. for .zip
Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types
Find the .zip association (may be WinZip File)
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and check the "Confirm open
after download" box

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.

In microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser,

Alan,

As a matter of fact I am trying to download a .exe file
(WMP 7.1 for W98). The dialog box appears for other file
types, such as a .zip file.

Per your instructions I looked at the File Types but did
not see one listed a .exe files. I tried to create a new
one but it said .exe was already used but it didn't
suggest what file tpye name used it.

Any other suggestions for fixing this???

Thanks,
Dave

No, it does not apply to .exe files as I indicated. The association is
there under Application but it is normally barred from modification.
Try this standard response instead (even though you do not indicate
the classic symptoms)

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.
