Internet downloading extremely slow

I hope you can help me! I've had my Dell computer for
one and a half years. The last couple of months the
computer started getting slower and slower when it came
to opening and downloading internet sites. It is now very
slow. I don't know much re: computers so I am really at a
loss. Thanks for any help you may provide me. John
