I installed my new Compaq computer this week. At
installation time I plugged the ethernet connector into a
router and the router into the cable modem. Everthing
worked fine. When I now take the router out of the loop,
plugging the ethernet connector directly into the cable
modem, the internet explorer cannot find the cable
modem. How can I get XP to find the address of the cable
modem without the router? If I plug the router back into
the loop ther is no problem getting back on the
internet. I thought XP would find any changes
automaticly.

Maybe the MAC address of your router has been registered by your ISP as the
device allowed to connect. When you connect your computer directly, without
the router, your ISP does not recognize the MAC address of your computer so
does not allow connection. Ask your ISP.
