I have connected my lap top to my desk top computer via
the network wizard and I can access the shared folders
but I am unable to get on the internet from my lap top. I
see the local area connection icon on my lap top and
status shows connected so am I missing a step here?
Desktop is running XP pro and lap top is running XP home.

No problems getting on the internet with the lap top if
I'm not connected to home network.

Have you enabled ICS on the desk top and configured the lap top as an
ICS client? Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Sharing

If so, these steps should help you find the problem:

1. On the desk top, right click the local area network connection and
click Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: none
DNS Server = none

2. On the lap top, right click the local area network connection and
click Status | Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1

3. If #1 and #2 are right, open a command prompt window on the lap top
and enter these lines. Each one should get four replies:

ping 192.168.0.1
ping 216.239.39.100
ping www.google.com

4. If #1-#3 are right, enter these addresses in Internet Explorer on
the lap top. They should both take you to the Google web page:

http://www.google.com
