Internet connection problems

I connect to the internet using a standard 56k dial modem. The modem is
working properly and always connects fine. When im connected i cant use any
browser or any other of connection e.g. msn messanger. What can i do?

Are you running some kind of firewall that might be restricting
access?
 
Im not running a firewall or anything like that. Its quite bizarre. The
problem seemed to occur after installing Avast Antivirus software. I removed
it to see if it was that but it still wouldnt connect. I have also been using
an adware remover to get rid of any rubbish.

AdAware shouldn't affect your applications' abilities to connect.
What about ad filtering servers that use a proxy connection? Any kind
of program that is out of the ordinary? Aside from this, I can't
think of anything right now that might cause this behavior.
