Internet Connection problem

I have been unable to use IE6 since the installation of a WiFi box a couple
of weeks ago, even though I can receive e-mails with Outlook. Clicking the
"Connections" tab on the Internet Properties causes the window to hang, and
when attempting to close this window, an error message saying that the
programme is not responding (End Program - rundll32.exe).

At the same time, my sound card now works only occasionally - the control
panel window either says "No Audio Device". Not sure if this is a related
problem.

I have tried a repair install of my XP, but the problem remains.

Can someone help advise on what;'s happening, and if I can fix this without
having to reinstall XP from scratch? Many thanks.

I will assume you done the installation for the wireless okay, hence you can
receive E-mails but you can't open IE?.
First try to scan for malwares on your computer from here:
But first try this;
1= Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced .

Click on General Tab (1st Tab on the left) and you will see a Button called
[ Clear History ..] click on it to clear your History caches, then click on
[Delete Files..] to delete Internet Files created over the time, click on [
Delete Cookies...] to delete your cookies left by visiting websites.

= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow installed on your
browser, On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there Disable
the None/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons ( you NEED to Renable them one-by-one
later and see which is the culprit or you can send them here in your next
post) and click [OK] to confirm your Changes.
Click on Advanced Tab and scroll down under the browsing option and uncheck
this box:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) and click Apply
then Ok to close your IE Properties.

Scan for malwares from here:
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
http://www.safer-networking.org ; for Spybot S&D

Then Open a Run command and type in:
ipconfig /flushdns click [OK]
ipconfig /renew click [OK]

Also you may have a winsock corrupt so try to repair it, you can do this in
two ways:
1- Mnually by opening a run command:
netsh winsock reset [OK]
Then Reboot your computer and try the IE.
or by downloading this winsock fixer from here to refersh the VBs of winsock:
http://www.nasstec.co.uk/tools.html
HTH.
Let us know.

Many thanks, Nass, but I'm afraid the problem is still there.
I have done as you have instructed, but the ipconfig /renew command brought
up this error message:
"An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : The RPC
server is unavailable."
I did not download the malware scan as I'm writing this from another
computer (since mine can't access any website due to this problem), and I
also still have the problem with the "No Audio Device"...

Any suggestions?

I will ask you some Questions and If the Answer yes then proceed with the
next step if not then send with the result:
-Are you able to ping any website by typing this command:
C:\>ping www.microsoft.com
- Does your computer slow without being connected or it is Fast?.
- Do you have an Anti-Virus up2date? scan if you have.

Okay for troubleshooting:
Open a Run command and type in:
services.msc click [OK], on the services control panel make sure these
services is started Auto:
RPC
RPC locator
DHCP Client

Close and reboot your machine and try to connect, is there connection and
you are able to surf!.

If still no joy try this:
Open a Run Command and type in:
CMD.exe click [OK]
On the command prompt type in:
ipconfig /all Hit Enter on your Keyboard.

*********** Ipconfig /all Like this ***********
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1 IP address
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
**************************************
Are you getting an IP in the Range of 192.168.x.x ?.
If you don't get an IP then your Router is not assigning your machine an IP
or renewed it, be sure though you configured your machine to get Auto IP from
the Router.
- Another Turn OFF/Power down your Modem then your router and also your
Computer for about 30 seconds or so then Reboot/Power ON the Modem (if you
have one), Power Up the Router and then Power ON the Machine and try to
connect, are you able to connect?.

You could be infected with the W32.Mytob Virus, but this a guess as I can't
see your machine but better to scan and be sure all clean.
HTH.

I am unable to ping - "Request timed out." x 4
The Services Control Panel showed:
RPC - auto
RPC locator - manual (I changed this to auto)
DHCP Client - auto

The Problem remained after rebooting, and so I used the "config /all"
command to check the list. The settings you mentioned below are as you
mentiond - no problems there - but still the "Internet Options" window stops
responding the moment I click on the "Connections" tab.

I have PC-cillin on my PC and the updates come automatically. I don't think
I have the W32.Mytob virus, since I did aalmost 2 weeks before this scan.
scan a couple of days ago and there was nothing detected. The problem was
around since 2 weeks before that.

BTW, something else has been happening which may or may not be helpful in
identifying this problem. When I lost both sound and the use of IE6, I also
noticed that all the XP games disappeared. They were still missing after the
repair install, and I had to install them separately. Now, after a few
reboots, the games have disappeared again!!!

Nass, after having replied your message I found a separate thread "Internet
Options won't work" (2/18/2007 4:20 PM P) under General Discussions which
describes a very similar problem. I copied the suggested solution here:
_______________
....Also, refer Fix 268 from Kelly's site: [For Windows XP]
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Restore All tabs in IE and Removes the ** Internet Options ** Restrictions
as well
_______________

I have downloaded the file "iegentabs.reg" from the website mentioned above.
Do you think I should add it to my registry?

Give it a try and let us know if you are able to go to the Options and check
your connections settings there.
About the Ping, if you typed correct and you timed out, then there is no
connection established with your computer.
What wireless you have installed (adapter) and do you use the wireless
manufacturer utility to manage your wireless or using WZC to manage it?.
Does the PC-Cillin have wireless security feature?, try turn the PC-Clillin
firewall OFF and establish connection ( but for good site don't surf for long
if you been able to connect).

It didn't work.
It looks like I have to do a re-installation from scratch, and reload all of
my software and drivers. One question though -
Since I have 2 hard disks in my computer, and my OS is on C: drive, can I do
a "File and Settings Transfer" over to the other hard disk, do a clean
re-install onto C: and then do the F.A.S.T. back to this? I hope there's some
way of saving myself the time and trouble of redoing everything from scratch.

Regarding the Ping - even though I can't ping using the PC I can still
receive e-mails, so there must be a connection. This is why I suspect that
the problem lies with some corrupted setting within the PC, which still has
the problem of missing sound and disappearing games (hope it's not a virus of
some sort).

My WiFi box comes from my internet service provider. I connect to this using
my laptop via its built-in wireless receiver. PC-cillin is in my PC, not the
laptop, and does not have a wireless security feature as far as I can tell.

This is very frustrating, but thanks for staying with me.
Luke

Use System Restore to go back to a time before the problem started.

Thanks Steve, but I have already tried restoring many times, in vain, before
attempting a repair install. The repair install also did not work, but
instead eliminated all restore points prior to the date of the repair.

Now that I have tried the various steps listed in other thread above without
success, I feel that m only option is to re-install XP from scratch. I am
just hoping to find a way to avoid having to re-install all my other software
and redo my settings for them. It'll take days if not.

Luke

If your problem is virus or malware related chances are you'll only succeed
in copying it to your re-installed Windows. You don't want to potentially
transfer the corrupt settings or whatever along with your user
files/programs.

I presume you already checked that it isn't a firewall blocking the new WiFi
connection in favour of your previously existing network connection. Disable
the netwok connection you aren't using (not in IE which locks up, in Network
Connections)

Going back to your original post it seemed that the problem started with the
installation of some sort of WiFi connection. You didn't as much identify
just what the hardware was but if it included 3rd party connection software
there is always the possibility that it is incompatible with XP (some PPPOE
connection software, wrong Windows version etc.). In that case XP likely has
its own version of connection software that you can enable once the 3rd
party software is uninstalled.

Nass, I did it!
I reinstalled Windows XP from scratch following the advice given in the
links you gave me below. I can now use IE without problems, and I also manged
to restore the use of my (expensive) sound card.

Many thanks for taking the time to advise me. I still have no idea what
caused the problem in the first place, but I certainly learnt a lot from you
about the ins and outs of XP!

Best wishes,
Luke
