Internet Connection Firewall

I'm running a fresh install of Windows XP Home following a hard drive crash. Service Pack 1 and all updates are installed. I'm on a small home LAN with a Netgear WGT624 router through which I access the Internet via cable modem. My son and I are hard-wired (vs wireless) to the router through standard 10/100 Ethernet NICs. Several questions

1. Both PCs can access the Internet perfectly and we can exchange files fine. I have the HP DeskJet printer attached to my PC set up for sharing and have installed it on my son's Win2K machine as the default printer. However, my son's PC cannot print to the DeskJet. It sees the printer, but when I try to open the printer, it's so slow that I have to cancel the operation. The same thing happens when I try to print from my son's machine...it's so slow that I have to cancel the operation. Even if I let it run, nothing prints. As far as I can tell, ICF is disabled on my PC (see the next question). What could be causing this

2. On the Properties sheet for my Local Area Connection, I do not have an Advanced tab to check on the status of the ICF. The connection icon does not indicate that the ICF is running, but I don't understand why I don't have an Advanced tab on that Property sheet. I am logged into my machine as an Administrator. I couldn't find anything related to this behavior in an extensive search of the Internet, including Microsoft. Any ideas? Is this normal behavior

Any suggestions/advice/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Regarding my previous post, Problem 1 has been resolved. I upgraded to firmware in my NetGear router and the printer now works perfectly across the network. I am, however, still confused as to why I don't see the Advanced tab (with its ICF option) on the Properties sheet of my Local Area Connection configuration screen. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Is the Local Area Connection part of a network bridge? If so, it
won't have an Advanced tab. I've written a web page with details:
