Have a Compaq desktop with XP. Cannot access internet (was fine last
weekend). Have confirmed wireless card is fine (works on other desktop).
Tech support (Dlink) thinks problem may be with Winsock or TPC/IP.
Appreciate any feedback or suggestions.

= Click Start >> Control panel >> Network and Internet Connections >> Double
click Network connections, then right your LAN Icon and select Properties.
On the LAN properties under General make sure the Internet Protocol TCP/IP
is selected and click Properties.
There make sure the Machine Get assigned Automatically IP address then click
[OK].

= Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced.
Click on Connections tab and make sure the Connection is listed there then
click on LAN settings button and uncheck Automatically detect settings.
Click [OK] and close Hit F5.

=Open a Run command and type in:
ipconfig /flushdns click [OK]
ipconfig /renew click [OK]

Also you may have a winsock corrupt so try to repair it, you can do this in
two ways:
1- Manually by opening a run command:
netsh winsock reset [OK]
Then Reboot your computer and try the IE.
or by downloading this winsock fixer from here to refresh the VBs of winsock:

Thanks for the advice. I went through all the steps and downloaded the
winsock repair from the link and I"m still not able to get through to the
internet. It seems like all the internet connections and setups are good
but when I try to open any web sites I get the message "The page cannot be
displayed"

thanks -

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Thanks for the additional feedback. Interesting that you mentions the
SPYWARE deal. Before we lost the interenet access. my son mentioned that he
was receiving many pop ups which we normally don't. Then the internet
access stopped a couple days later. Might be the problem.

Are you in London? Was over there last month. Stayed in Gerard Crossing.

thx
