Hi All:

I have a troublesome problem and I don't want to have to reformat :-(. I
hope someone can suggest a solution or location for information.

My Laptop has the Windows XP home edition. Recently it was infected by a
virus and I cleaned it using MS's anti-spy SW. After cleaning, the system
"seemed" ok but a problem arose.

Now when I try to access the Internet I get "page not found". BUT... What
"seems" on the surface to be a DNS issue is not. I CAN ping IP addresses on
both my lan and the web and I can ping internal LAN names But I cannot ping
WEB domain names. It "looks" like it's not translating domain names on the
internet. also, on ALL pings, the result has some random characters in place
of the IP address so something seems wrong other than just DNS. I
re-installed SP2 to see if that would help but it didn't.

Does anyone know what I can re-install to get this portion fixed? Everything
else on the laptop seems to work fine now. I would hate to re-format as I
have FP, WORD, ACCESS all separate packages installed and would hate to have
to re-install.

Thanks in advance for ANY help.

Dave,

Are these totally random characters? Garbage?

[LSP / Winsock]

DNS resolution is affected by the LSP / Winsock subsystem.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=318584
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=811259

If XP RTM or Service Pack 1:
1. Backup and delete the following registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
2. Reboot.
3. Open the network connections folder, right click your network connection, and
click Properties.
4. Click Install | Protocol | Add.
5. Click "Have Disk...", type "\windows\inf" in the box, and click OK.
6. Click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", then click OK.
7. Reboot.

If XP SP2:
1. Start - Run - "cmd".
2. Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the command window.

Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257>, or WinsockXPFix
<http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html> a shot.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=299357

Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command
window.

Hi Chuck:

First, MANY thanks for the quick reply.

I did get stuck on one point. I was able to delete the winsock and winsock2
and reboot. When I went into my Network properties (wireless) The TCP/IP
protocol was still there. MS's site says to uninstall TCP/IP but the
"uninstall" button is greyed out so am unable to uninstall and if I try to
re-install witout uninstalling it (of course) says there are no protocols to
install.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again for the help. I VERY MUCH appreciate it.

Pleasure, Dave.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP. Not un install, you can't do that.
