I hope someone can help. I have a Dell Dimension 2400, XP home, that
has always displayed a perplexing problem since it was new a year ago.
So far, nobody can solve it.

Simply put, if I ever let the computer sit for a couple of hours or
more without using it, it fails to connect to the internet when I try
to connect. If I reboot, then all is fine. I am using simple dialup,
have checked all power management settings, and can not figure out why
this always happens. I even considered reinstalling the internet
service(and did it).

Someone once suggested a moden time out feature, but I'm unclear as to
where to look for the settings. The only hint I have. All else is fine
on the PC. No virus, adware, etc., and this has been a glitch since day
one.

I would appreciate any advice someone might offer about this,
especially if they could elaborate on the modem timing out (if that's a
possibility). Thanks!

We had a similar behavior on my wife's comp, except she is on a cable
modem through the router. The latter was the problem. This particular
model of the router turned out to be prone to overheating (Linksys
something or other). After taking some measures to cool it, it worked OK.

So, may be find a new modem and try it. Don't have to buy it, ask may be
somebody around still has an old one they can spare you.

Thanks for the reply. I have an external modem, if need be for the old
PC. May be worth a try. Thanks again!
