I've a problem that I cann't fix.XP stops 1/2 way during turn on.I start in safe mode and check every thing in device manager which is always ok.I look at event viewer and I have the same 2 errors each time: ID8193 & ID4609. Could these 2 errors be causing the computer to lock up on turn on?

You need to provide all and EXACT error details for someone really to help
you. Also, you should look at the time that the errors were generated under
the Date column and compare them to when you experience your problems to
detemine if they likely are associated.

You can find additional information on Event ID's at www.eventid.net. You
will want to check Event Viewer and see what is listed as the Source by the
error.

Good Luck

I've checked my event viewer and the times are the same as well as coinciding with the start up problem. The source in the event viewer are for event ID 8193: VSS & event ID 4609: Eventsystem : catergory 50. What is my next course of action?

Does this problem only occur when you are trying to boot to Safe Mode? If
so, the is reportedly a benign error that Microsoft is aware of and has been
fixed in newer versions of Windows. The problem is with the COM+ subsystem
not being setup correctly. Have you been infected with a virus? If so,
this is likely the cause. Probably the best solution for you is to perform
a repair installation of XP. On the other hand, it is always suggested that
you look up the technical details of every virus you are infected with.
These details will indicate exactly what the virus does to your computer and
may lead to a more simple repair.

To perform a repair installation, you will need to boot to your XP cd. If
you boot to your XP cd and you do not get prompted to hit any key to boot to
CD and XP begins to load, then you will have to modify your boot order in
your BIOS to be able to boot to your cd.. That is unless you have a DELL
and all you have to do is hit F12 at the first screen right after turning on
your computer. You then would be presented with a choice to boot to CD or
other devices. To enter your BIOS setup, you will need to hit F1, F2, F10,
or DEL depending on your specific manufacturer's BIOS at startup. Your
screen may indicate what key to hit to enter setup or you may have to refer
to your manufacturer or users manual for the specific key to hit. Or you
could just try any of the keys I suggested until one works. Once in the
BIOS setup, look for the Boot Section and place your CD in a higher priority
placement than your hard drive. Exit the BIOS setup and save changes.

Once you are able to get the computer to boot to cd, follow the instructions
listed at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341&Product=winxp.

I hope this helps. Good Luck

I experience the problem on start up aimost every time I turn on the computer, not when I try and start in safe mode.I have also scanned for viruses(Norton internet security2004)with clean bill of health. In event viewer I went to properties for the VSS error and found the discription: Volume Shadow error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x80040206
Discription for EventSystem error: The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its inernal processing. HRESULT was 8007043C from line 44 of d:\nt_qxp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services to report this error.(Which I THINK I did)Does this ring any bells.
I am a beginner on computers so I'm a bit slow.I paid a tec to fix the problem which he didn't do (and charged me heaps for a new sound card & modem which were not showing up as digitally signed)but he did down load a new bios which made the problem more intermittent rather than every time.

Again, I would proceed with the repair installation and your problem will
likely be fixed.

I've done the repair instal & thought it worked but the next time I booted up after down loading windows updates it locked up again during switch on.The event viewer showed the same 2 errors. Should I reinstall again?

I would scan your disk for errors. The disk check that Windows setup does
is not very thorough. Open up My Computer, then right-click on drive c: and
select Properties, Tools, and then by Error Checking, click Check Now. Be
sure and check the two boxes before starting. Then reboot after the notice
prompts to schedule the disk scan. If it finds errors and then fixes them,
I would go ahead and re-attempt the repair install. Otherwise, let me know
what you find.

Good Luck

Thankyou for your persistence with my problem. I think this time she gonna work! Just wondering if you could keep your eye on this spot for me during the next week to see if you have fixed the problem, again thankyou very much.Charlie

bad news! after downloading a norton update problem returned. Before the down load I turned the computer on & off at least 15 times to test it (at various times not 1 after the other)and it worked great.
