Intermittent printing error

With XP Pro, SP2, an HP1000 Laserjet on USB, every 3 or 4 computer sessions
(that is, sessions between cold boots) I get a printing error--unable to
print to port or something to that effect, regardless of what program I'm
trying to print from. Going through the troubleshooting doesn't seem to
help. If I simply reboot the computer, after reboot whatever I had been
trying to print just prinits, and prints it correctly.

How do I go about fixing this or finding out what is causing it? It would
seem like some sort of USB problem or print spool issue, but I don't know
how to get at it.

Thanks.

Ken

(This is repost--the first one didn't seem to make it onto the newsgroup. It
probably will now that I am reposting it.)

Have you updated your printer drivers? usb drivers?

If you dont have any corrupt drivers this is probably a hardware
problem. To test this I suggest getting a PCI usb card (and using
those USB ports for your printer) and seeing if the problem persists.

The drivers have been updated and I am, in fact, using a PCI USB card,
because my MB is notorious for frying the bridge due to static electricity
from putting in USB devices. Of course, one of the USB PCI cards could be
bad.

I'll probably try to reinstall the drivers.

Thanks for the advice.
