I have Windows XP Home and an Intel Pro 100+ NIC Card.
For over a year now, it has worked with no problem to
connect to my cable modem. Over the past few weeks,
after about an hour or so online, I begin getting
intermittent "A Network Cable Is Unplugged" baloons in my
sys tray. It will flash on, then back off again - when
it is on, I have no connection to the internet.

I have changed cables, reset the card, removed it,
booted, reinstalled, booted again, made sure drivers were
up to date and even changed PCI Slots - all without
chaning this weird behavior.

I have searched and searched and can't find anyone who
had this behavior and solved it except for a guy who was
using DSL and got had 4 phone lines connected and got
some kind of DSL filter.

Can someone please help with this - it is extremely
annoying and I cannot find a solution anywhere.

Thanks in advance.

Is a power saving mode kicking in? check in Device
manager/ network card properties/power management tab and
disable power saving if it is turned on.

I am having the same problem with a DSL USB modem. This started when I set up a user account on XP. All power saving modes are turned off but the error returns intermittently and boots us off the net.

Thanks for the suggesstion - There is no power saving
that is on - no peower management options selected. It
was a good thought, but that's not the case.

Thanks again.

I had the same problem although with an on-board LAN chip and got rid of it by replacing my connection with a PCI NIC.
