Intermittent Boot hangs

Win2K Pro SP4 (& beyond). I have a PC that intermittently hangs in the
boot process. If I hit f8, then select with Debugging mode or Bootlog,
that usually gets it to start.
Defragging (with Diskeeper) seems to help it a little, but not
consistently. Also /NOGUIBOOT sometimes helps it but not consistently.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to remedy this situation?

I even have the CmdCONS installed as a boot option.

Is the event reliably reproducible? If not, well, those are tough to
troubleshoot. And with repeated hangs, I would want to make sure that I'm
allowing CHKDSK / CHKNTFS.

Does it always hang at the same point? What do the bootlog or Event Viewer
show as the last event before a hang? I would also review the system or its
components against the HCL, and look at disabling or preferably removing
non-HCL components for troubleshooting. If it's getting far enough in the
boot process, loading personal settings or the desktop, I would suspect apps
in the Run keys or Startup groups.
