Intermittent battery meter on taskbar

Has anyone else had this problem? Better yet, does anyone know how to fix it?
The problem is that the battery meter on my new SONY Vaio FJ170B laptop
seems to randomly appear and disappear. Sometimes when I boot up it's there,
other times it is not. I have turned it off and then on again in the control
panel, but that changes nothing. I also tried to re-install this utility
from the recovery data on the computer, but that doesn't help either. Oh
yeah, the OS is Windows XP Home.

G'day Joe,

This is only a thought and may not be the solution, but it sounds like the
icon is disappearing due to the fact that it's inactive. If you right-click
on the task bar, then click on Properties, this should bring up the "Taskbar
and Start Menu Properties". In the Notifications area, deselect "Hide
inactive icons".

I hope this is helpful,

JAmes

Thanks very much for the quick reply. What you suggest is certainly a
possibility as a cause for this scenario. Unfortunately, though, "been
there, done that." Your first thought on this issue was also mine, so none
of my icons are hiding any more.
Perhaps someone else today will shed some light on this, so stay tuned if
you're interested. Thanks again.

I have this problem on my laptop (other icons also fail to load) the work
around I have for this is:

Download the file xp_pastitems.vbs from Kelly's site:
http://www.kellys-korner.com/
(Line 53: Remove Past Items From Notification Area)

Create a shortcut t the file and place it in your Quicklaunch toolbar, I
have renamed it "Refresh Systray"

Then when your battey icon fails to load, run the .vbs file and your systray
will be refreshed showing ALL the icons.

.... It works for me... acknowlegement goes to Kelly and Doug.

Well, here's a final word--at least from me--on this subject. I followed the
advice given by jel183(UK), and the problem is now resolved. If the battery
icon does not appear, I just click on the "refresh systray icon" on the
launch bar and voila, it's there again. Too bad we need to do that, but it's
as good a fix as any right now. Thanks again jel183(UK).
