I have an Intellimouse optical USB mouse and it keeps on
disconnecting when I use applications. When it
disconnects a distinct 'clunking noise' is made and the
mouse seems to loose power. However if i disconnect it
from my USB slot and reconnect it that seems to fix it
for about 1 minute. I am using the intellipoint 4.0
drivers as i want to customize my 5 buttons and I have
also tried the intellipoint 5.0 driver but with little
success. I have tried giving the mouse a quick clean and
made sure that there wasn't any loose connections, that I
could see anyway. I have tried using the PS2 adapter but
it keeps disconnecting, I have also tried all 4 of my USB
slots with no success. Thank you all in advance and your
help is much appreciated

Probably a failed, broken, or shorted cable inside the mouse at the
stress relief. New mouse indicated.
