IntelliMouse freezes

I have Windows XP with Microsoft's IntelliMouse Optical
1.0A.

The mouse has always been a bit sluggish in the year and a
half I've had this computer.

Now the mouse is freezing more often, with the curser
stuck in the middle of the screen. It will not move and I
lose all control of the computer. Hitting "reset" has
been the only cure. This mouse freeze/lock occurs with
no pattern whatsoever.

Microsoft's knowledge base suggests a remedy which would
probably kill the computer due to tinkering with the
registry. That article -
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-
US;185663 - declares that the cause can be old files from
a prior mouse still on the computer. But I do not wish to
attempt something so dangerous.

Does anyone know how to unfreeze the mouse when it just
locks on me in the middle of ordinary computer use? The
mouse generally works OK. But when it freezes, if I could
just get it moving again without losing any content on the
screen, everything would be fine.

All ideas are welcome.

It's probably the mouse itself. I've had very similar problems with my 5
button Explorer IntelliMouse. It will work for days and then start locking
up the computer, having to hit reset just like you. I'll install a plain
vanilla wheel mouse and things will be fine for weeks. Put the Microsoft
mouse back and in a week or so have problems. The biggest problem trying to
get them to replace it is being able to duplicate the problem, mine is very
intermittent.
Usually when you hang and it's because of the mouse your screwed, it's
reboot time.

Sandy,

How would I know whether it's USB? The mouse describes
itself as "USB and PS/2 compatible". I have no
understanding of that. I just plugged it into the mouse
port, far as I recall.

Look at the connection for a USB device. Does the mouse plug into an
identical type of connector?
