Intellimouse Explorer USB problems

My mouse will sporadically turn off and then back on during use. After
about three times or so, it will not work. The movement sensor light will
stay on, but the light on the other side from the cable will not come back
on. Unplugging the USB cable from the computer and then plugging it back in
will cause the mouse to begin working again. This problem only happens when
the mouse is being used. I keep the Intellimouse software up to date, and
there has been one instance where a newer version came out, but the problems
still persist. I'm always good about installing the latest updates from the
Windows Update website. My system consists of the following:

Windows XP Pro SP1
Intel Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz
512 mb DDR Ram
Gigabyte SINXP1394 motherboard (SiS 655 chipset) w/ BIOS version F6
Leadtek Geforce 4 Ti 4600
Sound Blaster Audigy

Could be a bad mouse or bad USB port. Have you tried a different USB port
for the mouse or tried the mouse on another machine to see if it works
better?

There was a problem with the Intellimouse Explorers before the 3.0 version came out (the mouse not
software). They had an issue with the wiring coming out of the mouse and that was the exact problem
you are describing. I called the Microsoft 800 number and they sent me a free replacement.

I haven't tried it in a different computer, but I have tried it in other USB
ports on my computer.

I use a wired USB Explorer with Intellipoint 4.1 (I refuse to touch 5.0 until they put back in the 4.0 functionality that they so stupidly removed). I never had a problem until I added a 4-port Belkin hub. After that it kept dying every 1-2 hrs, regardless of which port I used. Exchanged the hub for a replacement, but it didn't help. Finally had to plug the mouse directly back into the USB port. Voila - no more problem
