Intellimouse 4.0 and side thumb buttons

I had the 3.0 for a while and the 4.0 drivers. I just bought a new 4.0 mouse and the new drivers dont let me use the side buttons in games because there is no intellimouse icon in the taskbar like in the 3.0 with the 4.0 drivers. I even used the new mouse with the old 4.0 drivers and still doesnt show up in the taskbar. WHY??? Is there a way I can enable it to appear in the taskbar so it can allow the side buttons to work in the games i play????
 
When you installed the mouse, you installed version 5 of the drivers.
Version 5 had features removed. It also had been previous posted that
removing version 5 of the drivers and installing version 4, the problems
continued. MS is aware that the mouse users would like to have the features
of 4 in version 5 and is working on adding them to the next "major" release
of the drivers. (Release: ??????)
