Hi,

I recently got robbed and all my software got stolen. =( I was going to
replace my HD right before it happend and well... i got robbed. I explained
this to gateway and then they said that they could give me one with windows
installed on it. I figure, yes okay that sperfect. I got the new HD that
gateway sent me, and of course it didn't have windows xp.

My question: Is there a way to install windows xp pro onto the new hd
without the cd? I mean, i still have my product key on the bottom of the
laptop. Could I use , say my friends cd and my key to install? would it work?
Is it linked to a specefic disc? is there a folder on the current hard drive
with windows xp that has the install files (perhaps burn it to a cd?) Via
network installation? I really don't have 300 dollars to buy another cd of
windows xp pro. damn stupid activation crap. ugh MS, ugh !!!!!

thanks for teh help everyone.

In the end - it was not Microsoft who screwed you, it was Gateway.

They chose to use OEM CDs because OEM agreements/licensing is less
expensive.

They can make a little more that way.

They also chose to send you a hard drive with the install files on it
instead of an installation CD.

I would get back on the phone with Gateway and ask what it would take to get
sent an actual OEM Windows XP installation CD to go with your OEM CD Key
sticker on your machine.

Have you filed a claim with your insurance agent for the replacement of your
hardware/software - "including" Windows XP?

What does your insurance cover?

My question: Is there a way to install windows xp pro onto the new hd

No, you need an installation CD. Gateway should be able to send you a
replacement CD for a nominal cost.

I mean, i still have my product key on the bottom of the
laptop. Could I use , say my friends cd and my key to install? would it work?

If your friend has an identical Gateway OEM CED, or an unbranded,
generic OEM CD, then it should work. If your friend has any other type
of CD, than it won't work.

Product Keys are bound to the specific type and language of
CD/license (OEM, Volume, retail, full, or Upgrade) with which they are
purchased. For example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key won't work for any
retail version of WinXP Home, or for any version of WinXP Pro, and vice
versa. An upgrade's Product Key cannot be used with a full version CD,
and vice versa. An OEM Product Key will not work to install a retail
product. An Italian Product Key will not work with an English CD.
Bottom line: Product Keys and CD types cannot be mixed & matched.

is there a folder on the current hard drive
with windows xp that has the install files (perhaps burn it to a cd?)

Don't know. We can't see the contents of your hard drive. But it is a
possibility; look for a folder named "\i386."

Via
network installation? I really don't have 300 dollars to buy another cd of
windows xp pro.

Again, contact your insurance claims adjustor to ensure that the cost
(if any) of replacing the Gateway installation or recovery CD is
included in your claim.

This last bit's confusing. What in the world does Activation have to
do with the fact that your domicile was burgled and you need to get a
replacement CD from Gateway?

Nothing I suppose. I'm just frustrated with the whole situation. I have
contacted gateway and they said i could pay them 160 dollars plus tax to send
in my HD (no replacement CD) and have them install xp again. Or I could pay
the 300 dollars to buy windows Xp again. They said at one point MS did
license them to send out HD's (for replacement of faulty HDS, etc.) with
windows installed and that is that is why the technician thought it was
possible. But apparently, MS has cut off that aggreement and here I am now.
I guess this goes to show that we should all make backups of all our valuable
programs. Tough lesson learned. Dang. Thanks though.

Modest correction: You got "burgled (or burglarized)," not robbed. "Robbery"
is a theft from a person due to force or threats of force. "Burglary" is
breaking and entering a building with the intention to commit a felony or
the crime of theft. You can't "rob" a building or "burgle" a person.

Of course, you could have had all your software with you when accosted by a
masked man with a gun...

Never mind.
