I had and XP and formated the HD and reinstalled the ME but couple of things
I need clarificatins:

After installation nothing came up on the screen. I could acces through the
safe mode but not normal mode. Just a blank screen with flashing cursor
appeard nothing else? Any idea why is that?

During my partition and installation it showed me the drive E: as cd-rom. It
also show draw D whereas there was no any primary or extended partition (only
one primary partition was present). Where the drive D came from?

Any help would be gratefull

Try an WinME newsgroup!

I've no idea about D partition.

For one thing, I hope you had made a copy of your system / important files.

The chances are fairly good that the "format" prior to ME did not completely remove all of XP's boot files.
Using a WinME system-boot diskette, boot pc with it. Assuming your system
drive is on C, you would type "SYS C:" . That rewrites the BOOT.INI file,
and you'd only have option to boot into WinME.

To completely remove other traces of XP, delete from c:\ (the root directory)....

these are hidden and system files. So you need to be able to access hidden &
system files in Explorer (or in dos)

bootsect.dos
ntldr
ntdetect.com
pagefile.sys .... if it exists
hiberfil.sys .... if it exists

First off, you have a corrupted installation of Windows ME most likely
caused by NOT removing peripheral devices like scanners, printers, webcams
etc.. when installing an OS, the only devices that should be connected are
screen, keyboard, and mouse..

One presumes that prior to re-installing, you used a boot diskette that
contained FDISK, and that you removed any non-DOS partition before running
ME setup

When installing any operating system, a RAMDRIVE is created such that the
installation tools required during the process have some allocated room to
work.. so, to install to C: (which can't be used as workspace initially), D:
is a virtual drive created in the system RAM (which is why there is a
minimum amount of RAM specified in order that Windows can be installed), and
the CD drive is given the letter E:..

After the first reboot during installation, the RAMDRIVE is dropped as there
are now the tools present on C: to complete the installation.. at this
point, the CD drive has become D: again, but you are not told this by the
installation process..

Normally it is the other way around with regard to upgrading.

Example, if you have a ME machine and you want to install XP. Now XP will do
a great job recognizing your hardware and assign the appropiate drivers for
such things as video, ethernet, sound because the hardware has been around
for a while and it usually installs aok.

What you trying here is the opposite. You are trying to install an OS on
hardware that was not available when ME was developed. Such things as video
could be a problem after you complete the installation of ME on this new
hardware.

Now what Mike Hall is refering to is right on with regard to performing a
correct install, but you will also need to complete a hardware compatablity
check prior to installing ME.

Even if you install ME correctly, if you do not have the correct drivers for
video and such, then it will not function correctly. This survey must be
done and appropiate drivers located prior to implementation.

In some cases, there might not be - say ME video drivers for your machine.
More than likely there is, but you will have to identify and download them.

Hope this helps

Windows ME is pretty good at picking up on hardware.. I was a little
surprised when installing an Acer LCD panel for a clients computer running
ME.. it not only put up the 'found new hardware' message, but also correctly
identified make and model.. BUT, if for some reason it doesn't recognise
hardware while installing, that will cause a problem.. as said, it is
generally external devices that cause this.. the same can happen with XP
too..

Monitors, keyboards, mice and analogue modems will be detected as generic
devices if all else fails, but this doesn't apply to the likes of printers,
scanners, and webcams..
