I keep getting the same message on startup saying there is insufficient
memory to intiialize windows. I'm running XP home with 1.25 G memory and 2.67
gHz processor. Can someone tell me how to get back into windows

This is not a normal Windows XP error message!

Have you recently made any changes to the installed RAM memory?

Is the computer dual booting?

Was the system upgraded to Windows XP from an earlier version of
Windows. If yes please provide details?

Hope this helps.

Please clarify.

Is this when your PC is first booted or when Windows is starting up? At
what point exactly does this occur, and what is the *exact* message you
are seeing?

How long has this been happening, and what did you do right before this
started happening which may have caused this behavior (such as
downloading a particular program, visiting a particular Web site, or
working inside the PC)?

Despite its apparently explicit wording, this kind of message frequently
does not actually mean there is insufficient memory. It more often means
that there is a corrupt or mismatched file, and that is producing an
improper request for memory.

You need to pay attention to the precise wording of the message and the
window around it, exactly when it appears (before or after the welcome
screen, for example), and then you can start using msconfig to shut off apps
to determine which one is causing the problem.

It seems the hard drive had become disconnected and couldn't be seen. There
are some strange hapenings though. I spent 24 hours rebooting and sifting
through the files in c:\windows using a DOS boot disk, and trying to change
my virtual memory settings. During that time I could access my root directory
quite easily - then all of a sudden I couldn't find my C drive and when I
rebooted for the umpteenth time I noticed that startup and BIOS could not
see my C drive. So I fiddled with the connections and hey presto, Windows
came back.
I hope that was the problem, although it does make me feel uneasy

Well, whatever you did, I hope your PC continues to work. :-)
