installing XP

i am trying to install XP on a harddrive with no OS. all
i am getting is "setup is inspecting your computer's
hardware configuration..." this has been happening for the
past hour. so far it has done nothing.
please, dear god, help!!!

Is this a new system, or one you are upgrading to XP? Disconnect all
peripheral devices and remove everything but the keyboard, mouse and video
card. Boot to to the XP CD and if XP completes and you get to the activation
windows, don't activate. Shut down and add the hardware components one
component at a time. After everything is reinstalled, you can then complete
the activation.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.

this is a semi clean install. i am one of those that know
just enough to really mess thinkgs up. i had an OS on the
hard drive, but removed it. i am not trying to install XP
from a cd. thanks for the advice.

You're not installing XP from a CD?! Then what /are/ you installing it from,
pray?! XP isn't available in any other format.
