Hi,
I may be buying Windows XP for Christmas to upgrade my
Windows98SE. However, I have important files saved on my
Win98, when installing will this fromat the HArd Drive? Or
will I have to format to install?
If so, Ill have to pay for the Drive to be backed up -
will it be formatted or will the OS just upgrade?

You need to backup if your data is important. While an Upgrade is designed
to be run over top of your present version and is designed to do so without
data loss there is always the chance that things won't go as well as hoped
for. People have reported data loss following an upgrade. It sounds like you
do not have a CD burner or second Hard Drive to back up to. Both of these
have come down in price. You can purchase a CD-Burner on line for as little
as $30 USD

here http://www.pricewatch.com/menus/m210.htm so you might want to think
about doing that as a "pre Christmas gift". Having a place to backup to is
critical and can not be over stated!
