Very basic question from a non technical user. About 5
or 6 months ago, I bought Windows XP and installed it on
my laptop. I used it for a few weeks and... Opps, the
laptop was dropped and basically, destroyed. I don't
have it anymore. Can I install XP on my home PC? Will
it work? What kind of messages will I get from the
installation?

Thanks.

Yes, this is perfectly legal. And since it's been six months since you
activated it on your laptop you should have no problem activating it
again on your home PC. At worst, you'll have to call up MS and tell
them what happened. Should not be a problem.

Presuming this was not one of the 'OEM' copies sold for installation
only on a new machine, and not transferable; but a retail copy, which
can be installed on a succession of machines provided it is only on one
at any time, then all you need do is install it to a successor. When it
comes to activation you may find it will go through on the net anyway -
if more than 120 days since you last did it certainly will. If not, you
will have to phone a toll-free number that will be given, to explain and
swap one long number for another to check back as you type it in
