I have a computer that had Windows 98 on it. I say had because someone erased some files/programs off of the computer and now it won't boot up the OS. I get a fatal error message when I try to start it. I have Windows XP that I would like to install on the computer but I can't get the computer to start up off of the CD-Rom....does anyone have any suggestions for me?? I've checked my BIOS to make sure I can boot off of a cd-rom and that all seems to be right...what do I do now?

You say you checked your BIOS to see if it would boot from the CD. Did you
set the BIOS to have the CD drive as the first boot device?

I have the first boot device as the floopy and the second as the cdrom...should it be a different way?

That would depend if you want to prepare your hard disk using the floppy or
cdrom. If your a beginner, go into your bios and change the first boot
device to your cdrom and put your XP cd in. follow the prompts at boot up
and dont forget to change your first boot device back to floppy after
windows reboots the first time.

Thank you for the suggestion but its not working. I put my first BIO at cdrom and I still can't get the computer to boot off of the XP cd, I think my problems run bigger than I think. I get the screen for starting in safe mode but it just won't start. I keep getting the same error message as before. Is all hopeless??
