I just bought my new computer and because I didn't get it
from Dell it did not have any edition of Windows on it.
Because it seems Microsoft does not sell full packages of
XP (or any version of Windows for that matter) anymore, I
bought the XP Professional Upgrade. During the install of
the upgrade package, I was prompted to insert the Windows
disk for any of the other versions of the OS. I inserted
a Windows 98 disk that I had, and the XP install
continued. Since then, though, I have had difficulties
with installing other programs such as MS Office and Media
Player, as well as non-MS programs. I have downloaded and
installed XP SP2, but it doesn't seem to have made a
difference - even the upgraded Media Player won't install
correctly from that download. Could my problem be that I
never installed 98 (or any other complete version of
Windows)? If so, how do I start over? (i.e. can I use the
XP upgrade disk again or is using the registration/licence
key code a one time only deal?)
Thank you for any assistance.
