..Hello all...
I'm all set to install Windows XP (upgrade) on the D drive of my pc. I've
got Windows ME on the C drive (factory installed on my Dell pc) and I want
to keep it there and have the option of dual booting after I install XP.
I've been told previously on this newsgroup that I need a retail version on
a previous OS to install the XP upgrade version - I've got a retail version
of Windows 98. OK, so what do I do first - do I have to go into my pc setup
and tell it to boot off the CD-Rom and then put the XP upgrade CD in the
drive? If this is correct (or if it isn't, please tell me), what do I do
after that, and so on till I've completed the process? Thanks, you 'guys'
are the absolute best!
Oh yea, one more thing - after I'm done with this, will I be able to replace
my C drive with a new one (I think mechanically, it's about to die), and use
my C drive backup DVD RW's to replace the drive's contents?? Thanks again!

Hello tobegone,
If you can get Xp to boot from CD great. The next thing is to chose
how you want to format the drive You will be asked different questions at
certain parts. The most important one will be for the key code. Keep this
code where you can find it. Believe me you will need it again. When asked if
you want to registar and vaiidate now over the internet or by phone it would
be as good idea to chose one now rather than wait just because you have 30
days. Once on line with Xp get it patched with SP2 ASAP if it did not come
with it. Go to microsoft updates.com click "Express Install" and they will
take it from there. If you take care of this before any virus spyware etc.
can infest the system your install of SP2 should go perfect. then get a
firewall and anti virus on your system. From there you can configure the OS
as you want or need it. If you keep XP clean and install all the security
patches. Youe internet experince will be much more enjoyable. Think security
and surf smart and let us know how you are doing. Xp is a great OS if you
think ahead and stay smart. Best of luck to you.

....thanks for the reply...
you say "if" i can get xp to boot from cd - is that my only option, and is
how i outlined it on my first post the correct way? since i would be
installing xp on the d drive which is empty, do i need to disable my norton
av and zone alarm, which are installed on the c drive? and do i need to
disconnect my printer and scanner from the pc to prevent any hardware
compatibility issues? any additional suggestions and tips would be greatly
appreciated. thanks!

If you boot from the cd to install xp to the d: drive, no programs will be
running because you haven't booted Windows from the c: drive where all your
antivirus programs and such are installed. Disconnect all external devices
except the mouse, keyboard, and monitor.

You will need to protect the new installation once it is up and running with
its own antivirus and antispyware programs and a firewall. The programs on
C: will not help protect you when you launch Windows from the D: drive.

....thanks...when you say disconnect all external devices, does that also
mean the ethernet wire coming from my router (sorry for the silly question)?
and is booting from the cd to install xp the best way to go? and finally
(at least for this post :-) ), if i boot from the cd, how do i select the
d: drive as the drive i'm installing xp in? as always, thanks a much...

If there is nothing on the D: the xp cd is the only thing you can boot with.
Yes, I disconnect the ethernet cable too. I let nothing near the computer
at this stage that the computer doesn't absolutely have to run (although I
do keep the beer handy<g>).

Yes. You will do a clean install of XP (using the Win98 cd for you referred
to in your OP for verification). Then install your backup program so that
it can take over and restore your programs, files, and settings. It follows
that you will need the media for the backup program in order to do that.

You should read the docs on the backup program so that you know how to
provide the backup catalog file since it will not be on the new hard drive
and the backup program will either have to be told where it is or will need
to recatalog the backup files. A cryptic message about "No catalog file
found" is a pretty panic-inducing message.
