I am preparing to install SP2 from the Microsoft CD and was wondering if I
need to disable my wireless connection during the install. Also, I read
somewhere in this newsgroup that you should disable your firewall, AV
software, and close all running programs, is this true? I have already ran
scans from Adware, Spybot, Virus (Norton and Panda online), deleted all
cookies, temp internet files, and will defrag before I install. What else
should I do in preparation for this install? I am very nervous about doing
this because I just bought this laptop and I don't want it to be totally
trashed, or have to battle a lot of problems getting things to work after
this install, like I have read in so many of these postings here. I
appreciate any help offered on things I can do to make this install go
smooth. Thanks

I have found that disabling AntiVirus software is usually good while
installing a service pack.

Yes, you should disable your AV while applying SP2, as well as not
having any other programs active. One of the machines I did had a USB
wireless adapter, and upon first boot didn't discover it. I unplugged
it, plugged it back in and was back in business with wireless.

Good luck!

One of the main reasons to diable your AV software is that if it is set to
real-time scanning, the SP2 install will take much longer.

See guidance at 'Installing SP2':

I would have the standard Windows Firewall on, if you turn a third party
one off. But I have installed with Zone Alarm or Outpost firewalls
running with no problem

It is becoming evident that there can be troubles in SP2 if there were
some adware/spyware and the like running when the installation took
place. So make sure things are clean first - a good guide is at
