There is a guy I know who has just bought a new PC, but
has already Windows XP Profession.

He is willing to sell me this, however can anyone tell me
what the risks are unstalling Windows XP Professional over
Windows XP Home.

Please note we are not talking about the XP Professional
Upgrade

Thanks
Peter

Assuming your friend's new computer came with Windows XP
Professional preinstalled, that license cannot be sold nor transferred to
a different computer. It is specifically tied to that particular PC
since it is an OEM version.

Then what are you talking about? The full retail XP Pro CD will easily
upgrade a WinXP Home system. An XP Pro OEM disk won't upgrade
*anything*.

Thanks for both your replies.

The version of xp came on a disk to install himself,
however he already has a version of Professional that he
will be erasing from his old machine into another new
machine.

However as sugested I will need to check the version of XP
before installing it.

Provided the copy he is selling is a retail one, and not an OEM one
marked 'for supply only with a new computer' or words to that effect, he
can transfer the license to you, after removing it from the machine it
was on. You go ahead and install - When it comes to activation, if it
is more than 120 days since he last did it, you will find it will go
through on the net just like first time. If not, you will have to
phone a toll-free number that will be given, to explain and swap one
long number for another to check back as you type it in

As far as installing over Home goes, you just run the Pro CD *from* the
existing Home system, enter Install, continue with upgrade.

But be sure first that you are really missing a facility that comes in
Pro only - apart from those the systems are identical
