installing xp pro over xp home

I'm getting a stop: x24 message when I try to upgrade xp
pro over xp home. The installation stops and I have to
reboot the system. Any ideas?

Install xp pro cd,restart computer,boot to cd,select install xp,
select,new install-not to install over current software,this leads you
to format the hd deleting home,xp does the rest.
 
I don't want to delete everyting on my hard drive. Can I
put XP into a partition all by itself and do a clean
install that way?

Why are you upgrading? XP home and XP professional are essentially the
same. Unless you are operating in a work environment with a server, there
is really no need to insall XP Pro.
