Something went bad with my Windows 2000 Keyboard
driver. I can not type once windows 2000 pro boots.

So I tried to upgrade to Windows XP. But the
Windows XP setup from the CD does not find my
current windows 2000 installation. The W2K installation
is in the normal C:\WINNT folder.

I do not want to do a clean install.

Any suggestions ?
What does the XP CD look for to determine that an
installation exists ?

Thanks,
Mark

You can only upgrade using a RETAIL XP upgrade or full version. OEM
versions will not upgrade a current Windows, it will only do a clean
install.
Have you tried to repair install 2000? I would try this option before
upgrading to XP. Systems that shipped with 2000, are probably going to
perform better with 2000 than XP, and there is very little difference
between the functionality of the two other than eye candy and features that
require high end hardware specs for systems that shipped with 2000.
Be sure to apply the latest 2K Service packs and updates after reinstalling.

I tried to "repair" 2000 in all available ways with the
CD. I can't get the keyboard or mouse to work.
My only hope is to upgrade to XP.
I am sure that I have the XP version that allows upgrades.
It tries to upgrade my Windows 98 computer when I put the
CD in.
I have installed XP on another partition of my bad
windows 2000 computer. So, now when Windows XP
looks for "previous versions of windows" it finds
the XP, but not the original 2000.
I just needs a way to make the XP cd recognize my
2000 installation.

Thanks

Does the keyboard work on the other XP install?

If you can access the Recovery Console using the Win 2k CD, try the below.
If the CD letter is say K: give these commands

COPY K:\i386\ntldr C:
COPY K:\i386\ntdetect.com C:

(two other files needed - just in case)

1. Type: ATTRIB -H -R -S C:\boot.ini DEL C:\boot.ini

2. Type: BootCfg /Rebuild

which will get rid of any damaged boot.ini, search the disk for systems and
make a new one. This might even result in a damaged windows reappearing; but
gives another chance of getting at the repair"
