To simplify networking with my wife's laptop running XP, I
want to install XP on our main system that is currently
running Win2000 Pro. Can I do this without loss of current
data, programs, settings, etc? Can I install XP to a
differnt partition safely?

Yes you can, and if you are running Win 2000, you will need the Win XP
Pro upgrade version, not the Home Edition. The upgrade is smooth, as Win
2000 and Win XP are members of the same NT-based family of operating
systems, and the upgrade will not cause any loss of data or settings.
Nonetheless, you are **ALWAYS** best advised to make a backup of your data
files every time you upgrade your operating system, or move to a new version
of Office, for example.
