my old computer crashed so im trying to install xp on the new one but it says
the product key has been used too many times but i have only used it once is
there anyway to use it because i only have 30 days before i have to enter a
new one

thanks PK

the thing is, you can only install a copy of Windows XP on one activated
computer. So, to be able to install that copy of winxp, deactivate theother
copy, and then reactivate it on the bew machine. Or, if the problem is more
complicated, you will ot be able to install he same copy of winxp on your new
machine. he solution for that is to go out and buy another copy.

Once is all you get per PC. You can contact MS for a new install by phone and
you'll be given a new key code to install it but it may cost you.

yeah, you can only make so many hardware changes before you can't use the
internet activate feature

I think it's 4 hardware changes where you change LAN card, and 6 if not, but
since it sounds like you've got a whole new PC, that's way 6.

Click on the Activate By Phone option and select the number for your local
area.

Um, XP cannot be "deactivated".

Nope, there's no such thing as deactivation, nor is it needed.

and then reactivate it on the bew machine.

Yes (assuming that it's a retail copy not an OEM one). However when you get
the misleading message that the product key has been used too many times,
you have to do do so by calling the 800 number provided. Activation over the
internet won't work.

No, that's never true (again, assuming that it's a retail copy, not an OEM
one).

well, the way you do it is to activate it on the new machine

I suspect that formatting would work even better but the machine died so
it deactivated itself.

Heh.

Call MS. They will get it fixed.

The old "let the magic smoke out trick" I see !!

My daughters old machine did that with the power
supply -- as they say in France "Le Poof"
