I have been told I can install xp on my notebook from the
same disk as my desktop. is it true or will I need to buy
another copy for my notebook as well?it is running 98se
right now but I would like to upgrade that.

You've been told wrong. The rule is quite clear. It's one copy
(or one license) for each computer. You'll need to buy another
copy.

There's nothing new here. This is exactly the same rule that's
been in effect on every version of Windows starting with Windows
3.1. The only thing new with XP is that there's now an
enforcement mechanism.

That's true for Office XP, but not for the OS
