Is it posssible to deactivate XP from one computer and
install it on another computer without violating piracy
laws

How do I "deactivate", move to another computer, or sell a previously activated XP?

Hi

Yes, you can transfer XP to another PC - depending on what type of CD you
have. If you have an OEM CD, then you can't. You will need to contact MS
and explain what you have done when you activate XP on the other PC.

That depends. Yes, it's possible to move to another computer,
*if* it's a retail copy. Howver you may *not* do this if it's an
OEM copy.

Note, by the way, that there is no such thing as "deactivation,"
nor is it necessary. Assuming a retail copy, you just remove it
from the first computer, install it on the new one, and activate
it.

Provided it was a retail copy. 'OEM' ones, sold with hardware (and
probably marked something like 'for supply only with a new computer')
are licensed solely to the first machine they are installed on.

There is no deactivation. As long as you remove it from the old
machine, just go ahead and install on the new one. When it comes to
activation, if it is more than 120 days since you last did it, you will
find it will go through on the net just like first time. If not, you
will have to phone a toll-free number that will be given, to explain and
swap one long number for another to check back as you type it in

There is no "de-activation" process or any other required
procedure, as such.

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on, and install
it onto the new one. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to
activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you
might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:
