One day the power went out while one computer was on. the system has never worked right afterward. So I decided to use my XP Home ED. CD to reinstall windows. Now the computer will not let the install complete. It gets to a 'fatal error' message and reboots. The system came with Windows Xp on it with no CD. When I try to boot it into Safe Mode, it goes back to restarting Windows installing, even when the XP CD is not in the drive. How can I get around this problem?

Thank you;
David

Your computer *HAD* a hidden partition containing the Restore Partition on
it. Since you did not read the manual that came with the computer and had
no idea that you had the ability to restore the computer with no discs, you
have now destroyed the only easy way to restore your computer. A Windows
install CD will have none of the manufacturer drivers for any of the
hardware that is in the computer. Those drivers were also in the hidden
Restoration Partition. You can use a disc to restore it, but you will have
to download all the drivers for each piece of hardware and install it
separately.

You can order a Restore CD from HP. (I can imagine you posting back asking
how...the answer is to visit www.HP.com)

You could have used the software that was installed on your computer to
create your own restore CD. The Owners Manual recommends this and tells you
how to do it. Of course, you did not know this either since you did not
bother to read the manual.

Before you do anything else, sit down and read the manual(s) that came with
your computer so that you do not make such frivolous mistakes in the future.
