Hi,

I have formatted my C drive on my hp 8660 c pavilion.
Now, when I turn on my PC I get a meesage that says.
" system disk is invalid "
I have bought a full version XP home edition and want to
install it. I have put the CD in the CD-ROM but nothing
happens. Isn't it suppose to automatically start a setup
process?
Note that the CD spins for few seconds but nothing
happens. I still have that message on the
screen. "system disk is invalid"

I appreciate any help I get on this.

Looking forward to hear from you soon and thank you in
advance.

yo, you have to go into your BIOS and change the boot
order... make sure your CD-ROM is 1st boot device THEN
your HDD. It should read XP Fine then.

Can I re-install XP using an external CDR

hi!
Firstly if u have formatted ur c: which is ur IDE0, which
is where ur booting starts, the system searches for boot
record from C: by default. So now that it has been
formatted there is going to be nothing in the drive which
is why the error message. To solve the problem please try
going to your bios and see if ur first boot device now has
been selected to CDrom to enable the system to search for
boot record from the WinXP bootable CD. It should work.
then select ur 2nd boot device to IDE0. after the
installation is over u can switch the settings back to
IDE0 for 1st boot device.

I have already changed the 1st boot device in the BIOS system to USB CDR, but still it couldn't find the boot record from my Win XP disc. I got my WinXP disc from the university book store. It has only one disc and the univesity told me that they have some kind of license with Microsoft. Another problem that I can think of is whether all the USB external CDR will work. Well, I just bought this new external CDR. Actually the IT people in my university told me that Win XP has to be installed using internal CRW only, external CDR will not work. Is this true? Please advise and thanks so much for your help

I never had this problem, but here is what I would do. Try to make the
formatted HDD bootable - maybe Caldera DOS that installs from the floppy
drive and is available on Ineternet. Then, install the ASPI drivers or
MSCDEX so that your external CD is available. Try to install XP - don't know
if it is true that it cannot be installed from an external CDR.
Of course, you can try to set another HDD as master and your HDD as slave
and take it from there... or use another identical HP w/ an internal CDR etc
etc.
