It's a HP Pavilion computer, the restore doesn't want to work for some
reason. So I installed XP SP2 on it, but it doesn't want to take the
serial number I have as a sticker on this machine. Well yes...but it
wants me to activate it after my installation is completed.

Is it normal ? What do I have to do to a have a working Windows XP ?

Thanks !

Yeah of course :)
But is it legal to do so ?

I mean a fresh install of XP SP2 on this machine using the SP1 key on it

You must be using a CD other than what came with the computer.
The Service Pack level is irrelevant.
You may or may not be able to activate.
If unable to activate, you will need to use the appropriate CD that
originally came with that computer.
The original CD should not require activation.

You are mixing up the CD versions. The SP1 sticker is an OEM version
and the SP2 one that you are installing is likely a Retail version.
The two use different CD keys.

You will need to locate either a Retail CD key or a OEM install CD.
